Reminiscing

February 4, 2010

The other day whilst running around Old Louisville for a photoshoot, i came across Cabbage Patch – no not Cabbage Patch dolls (tho i had one when i was a kid). Cabbage Patch is a neighborhood ministry to Old Louisville. It started because a young girl who felt she was not using her wealth for God’s glory – gave it all to start a little place in order to help people. She literally spent all of her money to aid the people she had come to love. And it has been around ever since. The reason why Cabbage Patch is significant for me is that i used to work there about ten years ago. I have lots of fond memories from that place. IT all began when the director came into Quest Outdoors where i was working and decided i was too talented to work at Quest. He wanted to put my social work background and heart for the city and youth to use. So, he wrote a grant and created a job just for me. So humbling that he saw so much in me, i worked hard to affirm his taking a chance on me. My job was several things: working with low-income families on life skills, providing crisis assistance to those in need, building relationships with the community and working summers with at risk youth. The latter was my absolute favorite. I was paid to hang around some amazing young people and take them backpacking, camping, mountain biking and canoeing. IT was an amazing summer. But after a year, there was some trouble with funding and i was offered a position in crisis assistance full time, but i had difficulty being passionate about it. I am an advocate for preventive action rather than band-aid solutions. And most of the time, crisis asst. fails to truly help people more than temporarily ( tho there are always exceptions). With reluctance, I left my perfect job. I am so thankful and totally believe in this ministry. It was wonderful just walking by and remembering. I hope to work again with them someday.
